Behind the Mask: Staying Connected While Social Distancing

So much of our communication is expressed through body language. Hiding half of your face behind a mask presents a bit of a challenge to ensure you are conveying the correct message with your non-verbal expressions. Being an introvert myself, I rely on facial expressions to do a lot of my "talking." While traveling with my daughter last weekend, I had my mask on the entire time. At one point she said to me, "Mom, I can't tell if you are happy, angry, or annoyed because I can't see your face." It got me thinking about how much I communicate with my face and how the mask wearing and social distancing affects my relationships, both personally and professionally.

Without the face-to-face interactions, you may be wondering how to best maintain your business relationships while so many colleagues are working from home these days. Below are a couple of ideas to put into practice during these unprecedented times:

  1. Connect on social media with helpful content: client alerts, blogs, online resources, and podcasts or webinars. Use the right hashtags with every social media post and avoid "self-congratulatory" posts. Instead, focus on how your business is helping others in a time of need.

  2. Pick up the phone. Call those clients you haven't talked to in a while and just ask them how they have been and how they are dealing with everything. Ask how you can help. Listen, relate, and deepen the relationship.

  3. Use Zoom for teleconference calls to achieve that face-to-face feel. Host a virtual coffee or happy hour, both internally and externally (see our team happy hour photo below)!

We can get through this. And until we can meet again face-to-face, hang in there. Cheers!
